dan bay is a frankfurt am main situated composer, dj, live-performer and musician. most of the sounds he is working with, are based on classical synthesizers combined with field recorded samples. his latest vinyl-release is published at the label sucio. since 2017 dan bay is resident at the radio x fade dj night and can frequently be heard at clubs playing dj-livesets or analog synthesizer livesets with his electronic deep house band the mpc orchestra. his vocal-electropop project dan bay & maya will be playing several international concerts in clubs and festivals in 2018.

the new label instereo recordings comes courtesy of dj dan, a us heavyweight who has been in the game since the 90s. while instereo has existed in digital form for some time, this new incarnation of the label brings dans full-fat sound to vinyl, and it kicks off in style with an instantly recognisable, purple tinted edit of a perennial dancefloor funk classic entitled squissh. this is an unreservedly big room record, as in your area also ably demonstrates with its immaculately produced hooks and punchy rhythm section. dan teams up with ido on that sound, whipping up a disco-funk influenced frenzy, and then he tackles scotty boy s silky smooth hey mr dj and turns it into a peak time belter.

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle’s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with “turn up”. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is “a curse, a blessing”. it’s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled “flying donut”. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named “the star of a story” from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named “gettin to the good part” from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called “gimme dat”, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

the chisa years: 1965–1975 (rare and unreleased) is a compilation album by south african jazz trumpeter hugh masekela. the album consists of 14 rare or forgotten tracks recorded by stewart levine and hugh masekela from 1965 to 1975 when they ran their own chisa records label. thom jurek of allmusic wrote “in sum, there isn’t a weak moment on this entire collection. it’s appeal is wide and deep and one can only hope this is the first of many volumes of this material to appear. bbe records has done a stellar job in making this slab available.” dan nishimoto of the prefix magazine stated “the compilation focuses on masekela’s original idea of “african american music.” from the early experiments of the zulus (a group featuring m’bulu) in mixing doo-wop, rhythm & blues and south african gospel and the mbaqanga/”grazing in the grass”-style work of the generically named johannesburg street band to the clearly fela-influenced ojah (masekela’s band in the mid-’70s, consisting of players from ghana and nigeria) and the readyfor-primetime belting of m’bulu, each track reveals a multi-pronged effort to find and challenge the notion(s) of how african and american cultural forms could interact.”

the winelambs is a new project on troubled kids from label founder jesus gonsev and dan piu. it s an assured trip into buttery smooth deep house for those who likes things sensual, starting off with the plush tones of -falling in your arms- featuring the soulful vox of shareen. -a genuine world- is another hazy gem of a track, setting adrift on a bed of harmonious chords and achingly understated bass. -poti poti- is a spicier affair that pushes the beat to the foreground and gets a little choppier with the chords. grant focus turns in a remix of -a genuine world- that strides confidently into rock solid deep house territory once more, extending the scope of this ep while maintaining the consistent vibe.

vigram, a new viennese label, debuts with a strong three track ep by dan lodig, also known under his lok 44 moniker and as one half of /dl/ms/. dan s ms-45 ep features two hazy and playful original cuts on the fringe of techno and electro. pinn 487 builds tension with doomy sci-fi synths, welcome repetitions are broken up by frantic hi-hat patterns creating a dialogue, while watery acidlines support the beat. can t stop breaks with the four to the floor paradigm and delivers raunchy electro rhythms with intersecting acid lines topped by ethereal sounds for the curious minds. comes with a massive spesimen remix on the flip!! essential stuff..

the bug kündigt mit bad feat. flowdan und get out the wa feat. killa p & irah (die erste kollaboration zwischen killa p und the bug seit skeng! vom 2008er album london zoo) seine neue aa-side 12inch an, die anfang dezember 2017 auf 12inch vinyl via ninja tune erscheint. auf bad schauen flowdan und the bug ein wenig über ihren eigenen musikalischen tellerrand: der mc bietet seine poesie in bestem singjay-style (abgeleitet von sing und jay aus deejay: dem eigentlich mc in der reggae-welt) dar und verweist somit offenkundig auf seine jamaikanische herkunft, indem er chams klassiker ghetto story zitiert und mit seiner eigenen geschichte über das aufwachsen in east london vermischt. ebenfalls für ihn eher unüblich, hat the bug den ganzen riddim aus einer durch ihn stark verfremdeten aufnahme eines einzelnen sowjetischen drumcomputers produziert und so lange an den effekten rumgeschraubt, bis der beat ordentlich rumpelte. und das wars dann auch: keine weiteren komponenten wurden hierfür verwendet. ganz ohne basslines kommt dieser track gänzlich mit vocals und beatbox allein aus so simpel und effektiv kann es manchmal gehen. get out the way ist die erste zusammenarbeit zwischen the bug und killa p, seit ihrem furiosen gemeinsamen song skeng! aus dem schon kultverdächtigen album london zoo von 2008. killa p bringt hierfür noch irah aus seiner killaz army crew mit und zusammen fallen sie über den beat her, den the bug in anlehnung an seine heißgeliebte und von junglist oder dillinja inspirierte reese bassline produziert hat. die beiden mcs üben sich im song in sachen dancefloor-zerstörung und klingen erschreckend glaubwürdig in ihren drohungen und einschüchterungsversuchen.

anfang diesen jahres führte domino records mit domino documents ein sublabel für außergewöhnliche studio-aufnahmen ein, die innerhalb eines tages unter live-bedingungen entstanden sind. nun folgt das frisch gegründete sublabel domino soundtracks, das sein augemerkt auf die musik legt, die manch einer als nur filmisches beiwerk unterschätzt. die erste veröffentlichung darauf entstammt der feder des domino-veteranen dan deacon. mitte oktober erscheint sein soundtrack zur film-dokumentation rat film. die dokumentation ist das portrait der us-amerikanischen stadt baltimore und dessen menschen- wie auch ratten-bevölkerung. die probleme, die mit beider notgedrungenen koexistenz entstehen, bebildert rat film mit überaus einfallsreichen mitteln und erzählt so die kraftvolle geschichte urbaner, sozialer und ethnischer ungleichheiten. dan deacon, bekannt für seinen lustvollen und euphorischen electro-pop ausdruck, hat seinen musikalischen stil für rat film in zurückhaltendere aber nicht minder erfinderische gefilde verschoben. so fand er sogar einen weg, die eigentlichen hauptakteure des films, ratten, eine eigene stimme zu verleihen.

john morales geht dahin, wo noch kein dj war. das universalgenie aus der bronx, das in diesem sommer resident dj bei defecteds glitterbox-event auf ibiza war und aktuell in londons angesagtem bussey building auflegt, veröffentlicht ein abendfüllendes programm. er präsentiert unveröffentlichte mixe mit klassikern von weltstarts wie donna summer, barry white, diana ross, level 42, cher, teddy pendergrass, eddie kendricks und vielen anderen. satte vier cds oder zwei separat erhältliche doppel-lps ist diese einmalige zusammenstellung lang. john morales legt seit mehr als drei jahrzehnten auf und hat in dieser zeit über 800 remixe produziert. der vierte teil seiner -m+m mixes- ist zweifelsohne sein bislang ehrgeizigstes projekt. 32 stücke hat er seiner komplexen und unverkennbaren behandlung unterzogen und sie so noch einmal neu erfunden. dafür bekam er, was kaum einem dj gelang: man gewährte ihm zugang zu den original-mehrspuraufnahmen aus den archiven. wenn boiler room ihn als einen -der besten produzenten und arrangeure von disco-musik- beschreibt, ist das eher noch untertrieben. keiner mixt wie john morales.

hot on the heels of the first two parts comes part three of hoshs stories from sa talaia series. the series takes tracks from his recently released album of the same name and releases them on his new fryhide label. first up are two collaborations with pig&dan. atlantis is not a fairy tale, a spine tingling tune with shifting melodies above rolling rubber beats. it s emotive and colourful and sets a nice mood to start off. the second brotherhood balearea is deep and elastic, with nice rubber beats and spraying synths bringing some real dynamism to the table. one of those tunes sven väth would drop at those special ibiza after parties. awakening of the birds a collaboration with karmon takes off right there and keeps you in that trance but gets more groovy with its inducing light footed drums, airy hi hats and skyward melodies all zoning you out. last of all, meeting mia lee is a beautifully melodic track that really moves you and strikes a resonant chord with your heart as the smooth and deep house vibes unfold. speaking of heart it features the heartbeat of hoshs unborn daughter. once again then, this is another richly rewarding ep from the one and only hosh.

this limon is sweet, not sour! austin boogie crew records presensts its newest 45 release: the solo vinyl debut of san franciscos own trailer limon (dan meisenheimer). as one half of the pendletons (along with e da boss), limon has been leaving his imprint on the modern funk scene since 2010 with classic singles like waiting on you, let me turn you on, and most recently on the gotta get out ep. this solo 45 features two choice cuts with appearances from west coast heavy hitters e. live and b. bravo. dancing with somebody is a sleek and sexy mid-tempo delight where limon croons about dancing with a stranger while another lover is on his mind. steppers will adore the bumping drums, soaring keys, and resonant bass that peeks its head out at the perfect times. too good.
